Sportcamptravel is closely monitoring EU border openings. The last several months have been challenging and our athletes are eager to get back to competing. Finally, we are beginning to see some positive news.

According to a report in the New York Times, the European Union is reportedly planning to reopen to fully vaccinated American tourists this summer. While details have not yet emerged, it is a welcome piece of news for Americans who are eager to travel to Europe.

Some EU countries have independently begun accepting tourists. According to the latest information from the U.S. Embassy & Consulate in Greece, the country started accepting residents from the United States, the EU, Schengen states and certain other countries on April 19, 2021. Travelers entering from those countries will not have to quarantine provided they have proof they are fully vaccinated or have a negative COVID-19 PCR test result carried out 72 hours prior to arrival.

The Local France reports that French President Emmanuel Macron has presented a reopening plan that would allow U.S. citizens to enter France beginning June 9, assuming COVID-19 levels remain under control. Visitors will need to present proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test.

Portugal is open for some EU visitors and essential travelers from third-party countries but starts reopening for vaccinated UK tourists from May 17. Visitors from non-EU countries must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test result taken up 72 hours prior to boarding.

In Spain, non-EU visitors will soon be accepted too. According to Fernando Valdés, Spain’s Secretary of State for Tourism, the country is planning to open its borders to tourists from around the world in June with the help of a digital health passport. Overseas visitors would need to show proof of vaccination, a recent negative COVID-19 test, or recent recovery from the illness to be allowed in.
